Fullbright Canada – Public Lecture
Fulbright Canada is hosting a public lecture that is taking place at the University of British Columbia and will feature Dr. Daniel Kammen, a professor in the Energy and Resources Group and Director of the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Kammen will be presenting a lecture entitled,Technology and policy innovations for a low carbon society.

TEDx Terry talks 2010 – Registration Now Open
For the second year the Terry Project will be collaborating with TED to offer a TEDx event. Registration is now open for TEDx Terry talks 2010 which will be held on October 2nd at the Life Science Institute. Eight student speakers will be given a high profile platform to share their ideas, passions and desires to an audience of 350 UBC peers.

Due to high interest in these workshops, more sessions are being offered in October. Please read the workshop descriptions carefully before registering. Note: The two Doc Exams and Final Submission sessions on Tuesday are more suited for graduate students nearing the end of their program. The Thesis Formatting session on Thursday is more suited to students in the early writing phase.

Write Well: English for the Academic Environment
This is the first in a series of three Monday workshops dealing with some of the fundamentals of good writing. Topics for the first workshop include singular and plural nouns, spelling conventions, building a vocabulary, and avoiding inflated language. The second workshop (Nov. 1st) focuses on the creation of good sentences, paying particular attention to coordination and subordination. The series concludes (Dec. 6th) with a review of paragraph structure and development.

Friday Afternoon Beers
This Friday RMES will be hosting its first ever “Friday Afternoon Beers”. Come relax at the end of the week and meet our neighbors in Fisheries and Biodiversity. It will be downstairs in the lobby of the AERL building, starting at 5pm this Friday 1st October. We’ll be catering to the non-beer-drinking folk too; this is really just a chance to unwind and make new friends.

NSF project out of Vanderbilt University
Looking for a GIS savvy remote sensing knowledgable person, ideally with a Ph.D. and an interest in environmental and cultural Anthropology. A one year position (possible extension) to fill immediately to work on an NSF project out of Vanderbilt University.
The ideal candidate would be fluent in Spanish and be willing to go to the field in Mexico to conduct interviews and groundtruthing of the remote sensing data. Vanderbilt has a strong Anthropology program with a focus on Latin America. The Dept. Also houses an interdisciplinary spatial analysis lab. To position is open immediately.

The Board of Directors of the Canadian Water Network (CWN) is seeking Expressions of Interest from qualified persons for the position of Scientific Director. The Board will consider people with diverse backgrounds in water research in engineering and the health, natural and social sciences. The candidate will have at least 10 years of experience in water research or management, as well as qualify for an academic appointment at a Canadian university. The role requires leadership and interpersonal skills, as well as a demonstrated ability to build and manage complex research organizations and networks. The Board will consider innovative approaches and alternative models to filling the role that allows the Network to achieve its mission.

Request for Proposals: Canadian scientists invited to contribute to global health
Grand Challenges Canada has launched a new grants program that will be a call to action for emerging Canadian scientists to make their contribution to global health. The goal of Canadian Rising Stars in Global Health is to tap into the creativity, knowledge and skills of young Canadian scientists to solve some of the most persistent health challenges in developing countries through innovation. Up to $20 million Canadian is available for this program.
Grand Challenges Canada is funded by the Government of Canada through the Development Innovation Fund in partnership with the International Development Research Centre and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Solutions Publications
Solutions is a nonprofit print and online publication devoted to showcasing bold and innovative ideas for solving the world’s integrated ecological, social, and economic problems. It has recently released a special issue dedicated to Getting to 350 and focuses on a whole-systems perspective of how to reduce carbon in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million.
