Enhancing Community Planning – Workshop – May 7, 2011
Saturday, May 7, 2011
10:00am – 3:30pm
Rooms 4-5, Creekside Community Centre
1 Athletes Way (Olympic Village)
The workshop will explore high-level considerations around Community Plans – their principles, content, methods, timelines and strategies. Community Plans are policy documents that provide guidance and direction on a variety of topics, including land-use, urban design, housing, transportation, public realm improvements, social planning, and cultural infrastructure. City Council has directed staff to report back on options for undertaking up to three new
Community Plans. Local Areas being considered for Community Plans include Grandview Woodland, Marpole, West End, Fairview and Kitsilano. In preparation for this report, staff are looking for ways to improve the City’s approach to community plans, and we would like your input.
Subject to Council approval, we will then develop more detailed Terms of Reference in collaboration with each Local Area in which the next Community Plans will be undertaken. The intent of the workshop is to explore broad issues around community planning. As such we will not be delving into specific community issues or planning within given neighbourhoods. Instead, the upcoming workshop is intended to provide an opportunity for dialogue and engagement about improving the Community Plan process and outcomes. As currently conceived, the event will provide a space for discussion around:
- Balancing regional, city-wide and local perspectives
- Effectively managing neighbourhood development issues
- Identifying ways and means to deliver public amenities
- Enhancing opportunities for engagement and on-going involvement
- Finding efficiencies in plan-making and implementation
We would also invite you to share any ideas that you might have on topic areas. We’ll be refining the workshop format over the next couple of weeks and welcome your response to the following question:
What aspect(s) of community planning (process, method, scope) do you most want to talk about?
Please feel free to share any thoughts that you might have by the RSVP date.
To assist us with planning the event, please let us know if you are able to attend by Wednesday, April 27, 2011. Lunch and snacks will be served. Childcare services will also be available on-site.
