the next trip is July 22

As you may know, I have been designing volunteer trips to Haiti that allow people to participate with self-sufficiency and sustainability efforts since the earthquake in 2010.

The next trip is July 22 – and we need more volunteers! If you or someone that you know would be interested in coming along please email me or go to http://www.elevatedestinations.com/journey_haiti.html for details.

I will not be able to lead this trip (Baby is due July 3!) but in my place, I am sending co-leaders Meryl Zendarski (who has led every trip with me) and Andrew Mersmann (author of Frommer’s 500 Places Where You Can Make a Difference) so it will be amazing.

All are welcome, however, if you or a friend is a teacher, student, or a member of the Haitian Diaspora, you are eligible for sponsorship (email me for details).

If you can’t attend you can also sponsor a volunteer at: http://www.razoo.com/story/Elevate-Haiti-Volunteer-Sponsorship-Fund

Thank you for your support! Please spread the word via your networks!

P.S. Here’s a thank you video I put together for the volunteers from last year, who were able to raise over $10,000 for our partner organization Let Haiti Live: http://youtu.be/tPzrMOuTy8o.

which will be held at the University of California, Berkeley, Feb. 22-24, 2013

One central aim of the Conference on Ecopoetics is to foster dialogue between scholars and creative artists, as well as to provide a generative space in which writing and activist projects can unfold. Because many of you on this contact list are practicing poets and/or artists, we would like to share with you additional information about creative components of this conference that may be of interest.

First and foremost: In addition to proposals for scholarly panels, we will consider proposals for creative/improvisational/compositional panels. These panels will not involve formal readings, nor will they be traditional workshops; instead, we envision panels that focus on a particular question or topic, combining brief presentations and/or collaborative exchanges between panelists with on-the-ground compositional practice. We are very open to panels that are experimental in nature; please feel free to pitch something you’ve never seen before. We encourage proposals for fully or partially complete panels (panels whose topics and participants are already set).
Secondly: We will hold a series of readings/performances as part of the conference. If you are interested in giving a reading/performance, please let us know and/or include this information with your proposal.

In addition: We hope to include local Bay Area excursions and a service/activist project in our schedule for the weekend. If you are interested in assisting with the coordination of these activities, please let us know and/or include this information with your proposal.

Finally: A word about funding. This is a grassroots conference with a small operating budget, so we will not be providing honoraria or paying for travel expenses. However, we are committed to keeping costs low, so the conference fee will be minimal. Also, we hope to offer a number of scholarships to participants to help cover the cost of travel and lodging, and all participants will be eligible to apply for these funds. Note that we will prioritize applications by scholars, poets, and artists who have no other institutional support for attending the conference. If you would like to apply for a scholarship, please plan to include this information with your proposal. We will provide more information about scholarships and scholarship applications in the coming months.

Moving forward, all conference information will be housed at http://ecopoeticsconference.blogspot.com/. Periodically, we will send updates to this contact list as new information becomes available (just let us know if you do not wish to receive these updates). Please feel free to write to us with any thoughts or questions. We look forward to hearing from you soon and to seeing you this coming February!

All best wishes,
Angie, Gillian, and Margaret

on Global markets and sustainability of marine fisheries.

Ref.nr SU 619-1465-12

Deadline for applications: 2012-05-31

Stockholm Resilience Centre is an international transdisciplinary center for research on the environment and development. Our goal is to contribute with new insights and tools which support long term sustainability and production of ecosystem services and contribute to resilience for human well being. Stockholm Resilience Centre also offers a number of courses on environment and sustainability but our focus is on research that integrates social science, humanities and natural science. For more information see www.stockholmresilience.su.se

Background and Research Topic

International markets increasingly drive local fisheries production systems. They affect marine ecosystems around the world by driving exploitation patterns, sometimes leading to systemic shifts that challenge the capacity of marine ecosystems to support key ecosystem services and coastal livelihoods. Hence, global trade plays an important role in shaping the capacity of marine ecosystems to support societal development. At the same time, global markets can insulate consumers from local collapses by substituting supplies of fish. Multiple market structures and mechanisms limit the potential of price to act as a signal to the public of ecological problems. These thwart peoples’ ability to recognize the issues and change consumer behaviour or to compel decision makers to change governance practices. With escalating global trade flows, consumers and actors in developed countries are therefore unlikely to perceive multiple instances of over exploitation which, if left unaddressed, could potentially result in ecosystem thresholds at larger scales. Understanding the mechanisms that determine the extent of feed backs from local marine social-ecological systems to the markets that drive and benefit from their exploitation is therefore an important step in addressing the interconnected cross-scale dynamics of global trade and environmental change and addressing a key challenge for sustainable fisheries governance.

Stockholm Resilience Centre is looking for a postdoc to help develop these ideas further and to start to unpack the market mechanisms and structures that affect the flow of ‘signals’ from local production systems to end consumers and back again. You will join the SRC Theme on Governance of Coastal and Marine Systems and will be working in close collaboration with Beatrice Crona. You will also interact with other researchers and thematic groups at the Stockholm Resilience Centre. SRC is an internationally renowned centre for transdisciplinary research on global sustainability. It is a dynamic and collaborative work environment with ample opportunities to develop international networks. For more information on SRC research themes see: http://www.stockholmresilience.org/research/researchthemes.4.aeea46911a3127427980006208.html

Qualifications

Preferably, you have a background in economics with a particular interest in international trade and analysis of trade data but a marine background and a keen interest in the topic and a willingness to independently engage with these issues and explore methodologies to address the question is also welcome. Some experience of addressing economic aspects of fisheries and familiarity with the topic of fisheries, global markets, trade and global change is required. Proof of excellent communication skills is a prerequisite and experience of quantitative statistics and relevant methodologies is meriting

Terms and conditions

The position is for 12 months, starting 2012-09-01, starting date is negotiable.

Other than CV and list of publications your application should include half an A4 page detailing how you, given your background and expertise, would foresee addressing the research topic. Please also include a letter of recommendation detailing your ability to work independently in a research setting.

Stockholm Resilience Centre and Stockholm University use an individual payment model so you may include your salary requests.

We are also concerned with your health and contribute to this through a fixed reimbursement for health and fitness activities and rebates on gym membership. In terms of safety you will also be covered by the SU company health service and insurance.

For more information about the position and the project please contact Beatrice Crona (+46737078587), email: beatrice.crona@stockholmresilience.su.se

tfn 08-16 2000 (vx), and Gunnar Stenberg (SEKO), tfn 070-316 43 41.

The postdoc will be part of the Montérégie Connection<http://monteregieconnection.com> research group at McGill and will be based in the lab of Jeanine Rhemtulla<http://www.geog.mcgill.ca/faculty/rhemtulla/index.html>.

The PDF will focus on quantifying and modeling historical ecosystem services, including finding and analyzing historical airphotos, maps, census data, and other records to estimate past provision of ecosystem services, and modeling the relationships between land use, spatial configuration, and ecosystem services through time. There is considerable room for the PDF to define the scope of the project within these general parameters, to collaborate with other team members (including co-PIs, three postdocs, and many graduate students) working on related aspects of the larger project, and to engage with the local community.

Working with other senior researchers at the University in semantic technologies, modeling algorithms for environmental applications and dynamic mathematical modeling, this position will provide analytical evidence to support interpretation of data in establishing meaningful models and recommendations for policy and land-use decisions of the land and water. It is expected that the Chair will bridge communication across disciplines and facilitate conversion of results and outcomes that will assist in informing future decisions.

CHAIR, HYDROECOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH

The Chair, Hydroecology and Environmental Health will advance understanding of ecological impacts and risks of the upper and lower Athabasca regions, with particular focus on the effects of environmental contaminants in communities and national environment of the outlying regions of Athabasca and the Athabasca River. As the senior researcher in Hydroecology and Environmental Health, the Chair will build an integrated research team that will strengthen the academic and research priorities in specific areas such as ecotoxicology, health effects and nutrition, environmental and atmospheric chemistry and applied ecology. Working in collaboration with other institutional partners in related fields, the Chair will complement existing work in biology and organismal ecology of Athabasca land and aquatic environments. The Chair is integral in conducting research that will help inform northern Alberta communities, especially those pertaining to Indigenous Nations to mitigate risks of the regions and waterways as determined by study of ecotoxicological and nutritional analyses and to develop strategies and vision that interface with communities, industry and government. The successful candidate will have a strong research and academic record in one or more areas of hydroecology, ecotoxicology, environmental and hydroecologic modeling strategies.

Athabasca University’s commitment to the greater Athabasca region recently culminated in the formation of the Athabasca River Basin Research Institute (ARBRI) (http://arbri.athabascau.ca/). The Research Institute provides a strategic framework for ensuring an integrated approach to contributing to environmental and ecological sustainability of its northern communities. To this end, Athabasca University is committed to engaging its researchers and the community-at-large in promotion the economic and environmental well-being of the land and water of northern communities and providing Basin-based knowledge that will contribute to improved decision-making and community stewardship. The communication of results across fields and disciplines to the community is of particular importance.

The appointments will be made at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level, depending upon the qualifications of the successful candidates.

Athabasca University develops and maintains an environment that supports equitable working conditions for individuals traditionally unrepresented in universities and is committed to employment equity, encouraging applications from women, indigenous people, persons with disabilities, and members of visible minorities. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however Canadians and permanent residents of Canada will be given priority.
